Why what happens within the body may matter to the skin we see on the outside.

We often think about skincare one ingredient at a time — hydration, exfoliation, brightening, firming, barrier support.

Magnesium: More Than a Mineral

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions throughout the body. It contributes to normal muscle and nerve function, energy metabolism, protein synthesis, DNA and RNA synthesis, electrolyte balance and bone biology.

We obtain magnesium primarily through food. Good dietary sources include:

  • pumpkin seeds and other seeds
  • nuts
  • legumes
  • whole grains
  • leafy green vegetables
  • some dairy foods
  • fortified foods

The body then absorbs, distributes, uses and regulates this mineral through a complex system involving the intestines, kidneys, bones and soft tissues. Magnesium isn't simply something we consume and immediately measure in the blood. It is part of a much larger biological system.


Where Is Magnesium in the Body?

An adult human body contains roughly 24–25 grams of magnesium. Approximately half or somewhat more is associated with bone, with much of the remainder located within soft tissues and cells. Less than 1% of total-body magnesium is present in serum.

The body tightly regulates magnesium in the bloodstream. When magnesium intake or availability falls, the kidneys can reduce magnesium loss, and magnesium can be mobilised from body stores. Therefore:

A normal serum magnesium result does not necessarily provide a complete picture of total-body magnesium status.

That does not mean that a normal blood test should be ignored or that everyone with a normal result is magnesium deficient. It means that magnesium status is biologically more complicated than a single number.


Magnesium and Bone

Magnesium has an important role in bone biology. A systematic review in older adults found a positive association between higher magnesium intake and hip bone mineral density, although the researchers noted that the available evidence was limited and that more properly designed trials are needed. Another meta-analysis found a modest positive association at the hip and femoral neck, but did not establish that increasing magnesium intake prevents fractures.

The message isn't: “More magnesium equals stronger bones.” It is more appropriately:

Magnesium is one of many nutrients involved in maintaining normal bone biology, and adequate nutrition is part of the bigger picture of healthy ageing.


Magnesium and the Skin

The outer layer of the skin — the stratum corneum — forms a highly organised permeability barrier. Its structure includes corneocytes surrounded by specialised lipid structures, including ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. These structures help regulate water loss and the movement of substances through the skin.

Research into NIPAL4, a magnesium transporter associated with keratinocyte biology, has provided an interesting mechanistic connection. Studies have found that disruption of NIPAL4/Mg²⁺ transport can alter epidermal lipid composition and interfere with processes involved in skin-barrier formation.

This does not prove that dietary magnesium deficiency causes a damaged human skin barrier. But it does establish something important:

Magnesium-dependent cellular processes are connected to the biology of the epidermal barrier. And that makes magnesium a legitimate area for further skin research.


What About Dry Skin and Eczema?

A large 2026 multicentre database study involving hundreds of thousands of adults found that hypomagnesemia was associated with an increased risk of atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. But this was an observational database study — it does not prove that magnesium deficiency causes eczema or psoriasis.

Low magnesium status may be relevant to inflammatory skin health, but current evidence does not establish magnesium deficiency as a direct cause of eczema or dry skin. That distinction matters.


Magnesium Inside Skin Cells

A 2023 study in Communications Biology examined magnesium dynamics in human keratinocytes exposed to hydrogen peroxide — a source of oxidative stress. The researchers found that oxidative stress altered intracellular magnesium levels and that magnesium supplementation reduced hydrogen-peroxide-induced cell death in their experimental model.

This was laboratory research in human skin cells, not a clinical trial. The scientifically responsible question is:

Could magnesium availability be part of how skin cells respond to oxidative stress? The research suggests this is a question worth investigating.


Magnesium, UV Exposure & Photo-Conscious Skin

UV radiation generates oxidative stress within skin. Laboratory research has found that magnesium supplementation can influence oxidative-stress responses in human keratinocyte models exposed to UVB. This does not mean magnesium is an SPF — it isn't, and it does not replace sunscreen or other established UV protection. Instead, it adds another biological question:

How does the skin's internal cellular environment influence its response to external stress?

That is precisely the type of question that Modern Skin Concept™ is designed to consider.


What About Medication?

Some medications can influence magnesium balance — loop and thiazide diuretics can increase urinary magnesium loss, and long-term proton-pump inhibitor use has been associated with hypomagnesemia in susceptible individuals. This means medication can become one variable within an individual's biological context: What medication is this person taking? How might it influence their physiology? What is their nutritional status? What is happening to their skin barrier?


The Chemical Connection™

Modern life exposes us to chemicals through many different pathways — medications, personal-care products, household products, environmental exposures, food and other sources. The presence of a chemical does not automatically mean harm. Dose, route, exposure, duration, susceptibility and context matter.

The more useful question is: “Is this ingredient appropriate for this skin, in this formulation, at this concentration, under these circumstances?”


Sometimes the Answer Isn't Adding More

Our bodies already possess natural mechanisms for cellular maintenance and recycling. One of these is autophagy — a cellular process through which cells break down and recycle components, helping maintain cellular homeostasis.

There is currently no scientifically established fasting duration at which autophagy suddenly “switches on” in humans. Therefore, our 17–21-hour fasting concept is a personal/philosophical framework, not a claim that any specific hour count is a proven human autophagy threshold.

Autophagy is real. The exact timing and magnitude of fasting-induced autophagy in human skin are not yet established.

Fasting is not appropriate for everyone — including those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, people with certain medical conditions, or those taking medications affected by food intake. Seek appropriate medical guidance before undertaking fasting.


Build the Reserves Before You Need Them

Healthy ageing isn't about waiting until a visible change appears. It is about considering the environment in which the body and skin are functioning over time: nutrition, movement and muscle preservation, bone health, sleep, UV protection, photo-consciousness, barrier care, medications, environment, lifestyle and cumulative exposure.

Magnesium is one piece of that picture. It isn't the whole picture. Neither is any single skincare ingredient.


Establish the Baseline
